Free the humanity from the Masks

By Safaa Nhairy

Imagine a world free from taboos, anathema and shames. In theory, you can express your ideas, thoughts and feelings without being humiliated or mocked. Imagine a time where you feel what you are is really what you want to be. This is clearly not what humanity experiences now, where culture, religion, and government shape people's personalities, dictating to them 'what is right' and what is not.

No question these systems somehow help make order and guide the humanity toward something, but perhaps these systems are encouraging the people to continue to wear masks and appear only the way they ought to pretend to be. Yes, we live on a free land; but we, ourselves, are not. We are imprisoned in this little box that traps us with our own moral laws. Logic, laws, 'rationality,' and morals hobble our imagination and freedom. We are not even allowed to think beyond the parameters permitted. If one ever dares to do so, he or she is judged as weird, odd and abnormal, and a member that needs to be fought: a harmful element to the society.

Our civilization creates slave people who hide themselves underneath masks. Don't get me wrong, I love my culture and my religion. But I feel that I am just another victim of the
system. And this is not a call for anarchy. It is just to face the reality and think of how many times a day do we say things we do not believe in, smile to people we do not like, hide feelings from the people we love and judge the unjust as just. Think of how many times a day that we lie to ourselves.

The intricacy of the human behavior is hard to understand. Philosophers like Marx, Nietzche, Sartre tried to explain this human phenomena, but humanity continues to acquiesce the laws and the generations to come are going to be more confused about life than we are.
